Mirella Freni

Freni Strehler

Is it possible not to love Mirella Freni? I don't think so. "Cause for celebration," my feature on Mirella Freni, with a sidebar offering essential CD and DVD picks, appears in the 12-18 May issue of Time Out New York.

The Mirella Freni Gala Concert, celebrating the fortieth anniversary of her Metropolitan Opera début and the fiftieth anniversary of her operatic début, takes place on Sunday, 15 May at 17h00 at the Metropolitan Opera.

The second image shows a scene from Giorgio Strehler's La Scala staging of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, one of the greatest operatic productions of the twentieth century, in which Mirella Freni appeared many times. Giorgio Strehler never directed an opera in New York. However, his Piccolo Teatro di Milano staging of Goldoni's Il servitore di due padroni plays at this summer's Lincoln Center Festival.

Claudio Abbado's DG recording of Simon Boccanegra, starring Mirella Freni as Amelia, belongs in the collection of everyone who cares about music.
