Being a lowly freelancer can be a drag, like when greedy staff writer colleagues claim all the plum assignments for themselves. But sometimes the forced humility—"Go here, write about this"—can be just the thing for one's intellectual growth.
Left to my own devices, I would probably never have attended last year's Bang on a Can All-Stars concert at Japan Society, an event that totally blew my mind. (Like, totally.) So I would probably never have become aware of Nobukazu Takemura's stunning work, and Japan Society's Onkyo Marathon would never have caught my eye.
