vilaine fille has been swamped at her day job, in a vicious snit over all the good stuff she's been missing, and comatose from allergy meds. (Must the summer come so soon? Oy…) She returns to the land of the living (well, of the writing) next week. In the meantime, a few New York-area events that deserve your attention:
On Friday, 3 June in Morristown, New Jersey, members of Opera Orchestra of New York's Young Artists Program will perform Weber's Der Freischütz with piano accompaniment. Of special interest: Latonia Moore (pictured) as Agathe. She sang excerpts from Simon Boccanegra and La traviata at an AIVS gala a year or two ago, where the radiant, liquid beauty of her voice had many audience members in tears. Please read the profile of the phenomenal Ms. Moore by my friend and colleague David Shengold. More on the OONY Freischütz (including Monday's Carnegie Hall performance, with full orchestra but without Ms. Moore) here. (vilaine fille is a huge Weber fan and does not understand why we hear so little of him, particularly with the likes of Voigt, Mattila, Isokoski, Heppner, Pape et compagnie in our midst.)
On 5 and 6 June, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia give the world premiere performances of the Variations on a Theme by Hugo Wolf by Michael Hersch, whose gnarly, saturnine music I greatly admire. (I reviewed his latest recording for TONY and also chose it as a 2004 CD of the year in Newsday.)
On Monday, 6 June, WNYC's Leonard Lopate interviews Umberto Eco. (I've not yet read La misteriosa fiamma della regina Loana, but The New Yorker ran an excerpt from it some months ago.) If you miss the noon EDT broadcast (16h00 EDT on XM Satellite Radio), the show will be archived here. Update: Eco also appears at the 92nd Street Y on 6 June.
So many amazing events! So little time! *cuddles you in sympathy*

She was stunning at the Met Council Finals some years back; glad to know her career's coming along.
Too bad she's not headlining Monday's show.

FYI, the wonderful Latonia Moore also performs on June 29 in Philadelphia as part of the Welcome America July 4 festivities -- "Opera on the Square Featuring Artists of The Academy of Vocal Arts." It's a free concert in Rittenhouse Square.
